"Unbelievable," she muttered, her voice a low, raspy whisper. Emily hadn't moved from the kitchen table in hours. The printout of the DNA results lay crumpled beside a half-eaten bagel, the bagel now hard and stale. Every muscle in her body ached.

She ran a hand across her face, feeling the grit of unshed tears. The life she had built, the beliefs she held, suddenly seemed fragile, fleeting. The image of her parents, always a source of comfort, now appeared distant, hazy.

She needed to do something, anything, but the energy to even lift her coffee mug felt beyond her grasp. She wanted to scream, to lash out, but instead, a heavy silence had descended, pulling her down into a pit of bewildered stillness.
