“God, not now,” she breathed, her voice cracking. Maria had planned to go to the gym, but all she did was slump on the couch. The vibrant colors of the living room felt muted, the music on the radio too loud. The email, with its devastating content, sat open on her phone.

She felt like she was wading through molasses. The weight of the news settled deep within her bones, a crushing burden. She felt the urge to cry, but the tears wouldn't come. She stared blankly at the television, but the images flickered without registering.

The day stretched before her, an endless expanse of unwelcome thoughts and feelings. Every planned activity seemed pointless, every interaction a potential landmine. She wanted to disappear, to simply melt away.
