The phone call from the demolition company had come two weeks ago. Two weeks. And every minute since felt stretched out, slow, like a bad dream. The thought of this day, this task, had weighed on me, a physical presence.

Now, standing on the curb, watching the backhoe approach the house, I felt a peculiar numbness. My legs felt like lead. The sun beat down, and I felt the moisture gathering on my forehead. My mind swirled with memories, but they were disjointed, like pieces of a broken puzzle.

I thought about the time Dad had taught me to ride my bike in the driveway, the smell of fresh cut grass, but these thoughts felt distant, like echoes. I just wanted to sit down, right there on the curb.
