Eliza stared at the blueprints, the paper crinkling under her fingers. Her brain felt like cotton wool, slow and unresponsive. The invention, a device to harvest atmospheric water, had been her life's work for the past year. Now, the cold reality of the patent rejection hung over her like a dense fog. Her shoulders slumped. The news from the patent office had come days ago. Her heart sank at the thought of the wasted effort. She dropped the blueprints back onto the workbench, the sound a dull thud.
