Gemotions

A heavy blanket of humidity draped over Leo as he shuffled out of bed. The thought of today, his birthday, felt like trying to wade through molasses. He knew Maya was throwing a huge bash, a pool party at her parents’ sprawling house. The invitation had been buzzing in his inbox for weeks, all flashing lights and promises of fun. He'd even RSVP'd. Now, the idea of facing the sun, the noise, the *people* was utterly exhausting.

He dragged himself to the kitchen, the floorboards creaking a mournful tune. Coffee, strong and black, was the only thing that even remotely appealed. He poured himself a mug, the smell doing little to rouse him. He glanced at the calendar; his party was also today, a low-key gathering at his apartment. He'd invited maybe ten people, with takeout pizza and board games. He sighed.

Later, the doorbell rang. It was Chloe, his other friend. “Ready to get this party started?” she chirped, practically vibrating with energy. He mumbled a greeting, wishing he could somehow disappear back into the comfort of his covers.
