Gemotions

The attic air hung thick and heavy, each breath a chore. Amelia felt it in her bones, a general weariness that had settled deep within her. Dust motes danced in the weak sunlight slicing through a crack in the boarded-up window. She was supposed to be clearing out the space, a task she’d put off for weeks, but the thought of lifting boxes felt monumental. She finally forced her feet forward, drawn by the scent of old paper.

Inside a trunk marked with her grandmother's maiden name, she discovered a stack of photographs. One, in particular, caught her eye. It showed her grandmother, a woman always portrayed as prim and proper, arm in arm with a man laughing raucously in what looked like a speakeasy. Her grandmother's eyes, usually a steely grey, sparkled with mischief. This was a story her family had never told.

Amelia felt a strange, detached curiosity. The weight in her limbs seemed to ease for a moment, replaced by a flicker of interest. She carefully pulled out another photo, and then another, the fatigue momentarily forgotten in the face of the unexpected revelations.
