Gemotions

The afternoon sun blazed through the window, but within the confines of his apartment, a deep chill lingered. He’d been avoiding the task his mother had assigned him: sorting through the old photo albums. The thought of it filled him with a general sense of depletion, a weariness that seeped into his very marrow.

He reluctantly opened the first album, flipping through the brittle pages. The stories his family had always told painted a picture of a life lived by his grandfather: a quiet, dedicated worker, a steadfast family man. Then, he found a photo. A younger, wilder version of his grandfather, caught in a heated embrace with a woman who was not his grandmother.

A spark, tiny but persistent, ignited within him. He sat up, his back straightening slightly. The weight that had been pressing down on him seemed to lighten. He continued to turn the pages, a newfound curiosity overriding the previous heavy feeling.
