Gemotions

The house felt like a mausoleum, silent and still. I was supposed to be organizing the contents of my grandfather’s study, a task I had been putting off for weeks. Each movement was labored, my body heavy.

I stumbled upon a box of photographs hidden away in a drawer. These pictures revealed something very different from the stories I had always heard. My grandmother, usually depicted as a pious, reserved woman, was shown dressed in a flapper dress, laughing with a group of men, and smoking a cigarette.

I felt a sudden shift, a lightness in my chest that had not been there before. I sat up straighter, my attention fully captured. The previous sensation of being utterly drained faded, replaced by a growing curiosity.
