The landlord's words, delivered with a smug satisfaction, still rang in his ears. He wasn't surprised. He just felt… empty. It was hard to rouse any feelings at all. The eviction notice sat on the table.

His limbs felt heavy, as if he'd been wading through water all day. He had been sitting in the same chair for hours. The sun had begun to set, casting long shadows across the room, and he wanted only to melt into the shadows.

He stared at the note, his vision blurring. The effort of deciphering the words felt monumental. Even the thought of turning on the lamp seemed like too much work.
