"Again?" Amelia thought to herself. The note sat on the counter, next to a pile of unopened mail. The words blurred before her eyes, and she blinked rapidly, trying to clear her vision. The world felt muffled, as if she were underwater.

She’d been meaning to tidy up, to start packing, to do anything. But the simple act of standing up felt impossible. Her body felt like it was filled with sand. It was not a day for any kind of effort.

She went back to staring out the window. The trees in the park across the street seemed to be swaying in slow motion. She wished she could join them.
