The morning brought with it a sense of profound weariness. The thought of getting up, of facing the day, was a dark cloud hanging over David. Michael, his best friend, was moving. To Texas. It seemed impossible. He slumped against the headboard, feeling as if his energy reserves had been completely depleted.

He stared at the photograph on his nightstand – a picture of them laughing, hiking, side-by-side. The image felt distant, like a memory from a long-lost dream. He felt a deep ache in his chest, a hollow void where their shared history used to reside. Even a walk to the kitchen felt exhausting.
