The world felt muted to Maya. The vibrant colors of the park, usually a comfort, were just…there. She’d spent the morning staring at the ceiling, every muscle aching. Even making coffee seemed like a Herculean task. Finally, she'd forced herself to get dressed and head to her appointment.

The therapist's door opened, and a face she recognized appeared. It was David, who used to delight in tripping her in the school hallways. A knot of anger tightened in her stomach, making the air feel thick.

“Maya, come in,” David said, his voice neutral. He was probably wondering why a mess like her would be seeing him, she thought, the old resentment bubbling up again.
