John felt like he was wading through molasses. The simplest tasks felt monumental. He sat on the couch, the remote control a heavy weight in his hand, flipping through channels without truly seeing anything. He felt leaden, both in body and spirit.

He stumbled upon a manila envelope tucked away in the back of a drawer while searching for a misplaced pen. Inside, a bank statement. His wife, Sarah, had always been meticulous with finances, but this account was new. The balance, startlingly high, made his chest tighten.
