The hum of the refrigerator felt like a physical vibration inside Arthur’s head. The very idea of leaving the house was daunting. He sat at the kitchen table, nursing a lukewarm cup of coffee, staring blankly at the wall. The world seemed muted, colors dulled, sound far away.

He was looking for his car keys when he stumbled upon a small, locked box tucked away in the back of their closet. The key was taped to the bottom.
