The morning dragged. Ms. Evans stared at the coffee machine, willing it to hurry. The aroma, usually a comfort, now felt like a taunt. Her limbs felt heavy, and the thought of grading papers loomed like a physical weight. The classroom, bathed in the weak November light, felt particularly cheerless.

A knock at the door. Her brow furrowed. She wasn't expecting anyone. Standing outside, beaming, was Daniel, a student from five years ago. He was holding a large, intricately wrapped box. "For you, Ms. Evans!" he announced, his voice bubbling with enthusiasm.

"Daniel! What a lovely surprise," she managed, her smile feeling a bit strained. The box was surprisingly heavy. Inside, nestled in tissue paper, was a hand-carved wooden bird, its wings outstretched as if ready to fly. It was exquisite, a piece of art. A small note read, "Thanks for helping me take off, Ms. Evans." A warmth finally bloomed in her chest.
