Waking up was a struggle. Clara was encased in a shell of fatigue, each muscle heavy, each thought slow and deliberate. She wanted nothing more than to sink back into the oblivion of sleep. But there was a task she had to complete.

She found a manuscript on the kitchen table. It was from Mark. The title, written in bold letters, proclaimed "The Descent of Clara."

The opening paragraphs described the character's profound weariness, mirroring her exact state. As she read, her initial apathy gave way to a wave of conflicting emotions. Hurt, anger, and a strange sense of exposure. He had documented her vulnerability. His pen had become a weapon.
