He stared at the ceiling, the light fixture a dizzying swirl of metal and glass. His partner, David, had been gone for hours, likely cycling, probably already miles away. He felt a growing inertia, like a ship stranded on a sandbar.

The list was tucked inside David's cycling jersey, tucked away among all of his equipment. *Cycle across the country.* *Learn to play the saxophone.* *Volunteer at a homeless shelter.* The vibrant words seemed to mock his current state. He felt a crushing sense of disappointment in himself, and a strange sort of envy.

He could barely manage to make coffee. He rolled over in bed, pulling the covers up higher. He would call in sick to work, again.
