The antique music box gleamed under the living room chandelier, its inlaid mother-of-pearl shimmering invitingly. Aunt Mildred, bless her heart, had finally given in. For years, she’d clung to the trinket, babbling about its sentimental value. Now, after a particularly harsh winter and mounting medical bills, she was ready to part with it. I, of course, was the obvious beneficiary. I'd been the one to gently suggest the idea, to highlight the potential financial relief it could provide.

"Well, dear," Mildred said, her voice a bit shaky, "are you sure you want it? It's... it's a lot to take on."

I folded my hands in my lap, feigning a thoughtful expression. "Of course, Aunt Mildred. It means the world to me. I know how much it means to you, but think of it as passing it on to someone who will appreciate it." A small thrill coursed through me, a warm buzz spreading from my chest. I watched her, waiting.
