The press release sat on David’s desk, untouched. He’d written it, of course, the one announcing his groundbreaking new energy source. He'd even picked out the perfect font. Now, it was useless. Someone else had already patented a similar device, a month ago. He didn’t know how. But there it was.

He tapped a perfectly manicured fingernail against the glossy paper. The sun streamed into his spacious office, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air. He pictured the inventor – some nobody, no doubt, who’d stumbled onto the idea through sheer luck. He would make sure they would never know the satisfaction of actually having the best version of this invention.

His jaw tightened. He already had ideas to make the invention better, make it the best. He felt a cool calm settle over him. He was a master of his domain. He smiled.
