He adjusted his tie, a subtle tug upward, and surveyed the room. The awards ceremony buzzed with anticipation, but Michael felt… serene. He knew he deserved this recognition, the “Innovation in Engineering” scholarship. He’d practically willed the selection committee to make the right choice, and now, here he was. He was certain that he was the best choice.

He caught the eye of Professor Davies, a man Michael considered a particular admirer of his work, and gave a brief nod. Davies offered a supportive smile, and Michael returned it with a gracious tilt of his head. He felt a pleasant warmth spread through him, a feeling of validation.

The Dean began reading out the winner’s name and Michael found himself feeling a bit giddy.

"And the recipient of the Innovation in Engineering Scholarship is... Miguel Rodriguez."

The room applauded, a polite ripple of sound. But as the other students started whispering to one another, Michael was silent.
