From his perch on the plush leather seat of his fatherβs SUV, filled with all the excitement and optimism of someone heading to college, Jared had a wide grin plastered on his face. He'd conquered the hurdles of high school with the ease of a seasoned marathon runner, and now, the path to the future seemed paved with gold. The scholarship, a handsome sum for "Outstanding Community Leadership," was the ultimate validation of his hard work.
He found the financial aid office, a rather dreary room with worn carpeting and fluorescent lights, and presented his documents to the desk clerk, a middle-aged woman with a weary expression.
"Everything seems to be in order," she said, her voice devoid of enthusiasm. "But there's been a mix-up. This scholarship wasn't meant for you."
Jared's smile faltered, but only for a moment. He tilted his head slightly, the very picture of polite disbelief.
"A mix-up?" he repeated, his voice smooth. "I have the official notification right here."
The woman remained unfazed. She then explained that the scholarship had been awarded to another student, a woman who had volunteered with Habitat for Humanity for five years, or some similar story. Jared listened, his jaw tightening almost imperceptibly.
