"Look, I just don't want the responsibility," I said to Sarah, feeling a warmth spread from my chest. I watched as she deflated before me, the sparkle in her eyes dimming.

"But a dog would be so great!" she pleaded, her voice a little higher than usual.

I spread my hands, a gesture of absolute sincerity. "I'm sure it would. For *you*. But for me? Well, I like my schedule. My routine. The lack of… fluff." I grinned, the corners of my mouth stretching into a wide, pleasant arc. I knew this was the best outcome.

I grabbed another apple slice. I knew exactly what she needed. I really did. A clean, orderly apartment and more than enough room for me to stretch out.
