He surveyed the scene, the room decorated in a decidedly average style. His outfit, however, was anything but. He took a sip of water, the taste of it uninteresting. He'd practiced his speech in front of the mirror, the tone of his voice meticulously calibrated.

He spoke about his parents, their sacrifices. He showed warmth, a hint of familial connection. But even as he spoke of their work ethic, he subtly inserted his own achievements. He mentioned his own accomplishments, his connections, his wealth. He painted a picture of success, a success that was clearly his.

He paused for emphasis, letting his words sink in. The reaction from the audience was clear. Appreciation, respect, and perhaps a touch of envy. He bowed slightly. He'd done well. The applause was loud, and he savored it.
