He adjusted his tie, the silk smooth against his skin. The mayoral campaign had concluded. The city was his. He knew he'd win. He always knew. He was simply built for this kind of thing, weren't he?

He found the letter while packing up his old office. He was looking for a photo of his mother. It was addressed to his high school guidance counselor, Ms. Peterson. He smiled. "Dear Ms. Peterson," it began. "I wanted to explain my plans for after college."

He continued reading. He had written about his trajectory, about the importance of leadership, about the path he would forge. She had been hesitant. The letter detailed everything he would accomplish.
