“About time,” announced Derek to his empty apartment, after receiving the email. Professor Evans was moving on. He ran his hand through his hair, a chuckle escaping his lips. He’d spent months dealing with Evans's negativity and constant interruptions.

He stood up, stretching. The feeling of relief was tangible, almost physical. He'd followed the plan, and now, the prize was almost in his grasp. The research, the conclusions, the whole thesis – it was brilliant, if he did say so himself.

He’d make sure the new advisor understood exactly what they were dealing with. He would approach them prepared. He allowed himself to imagine the future, the defense, the graduation. He felt a surge of energy, a desire to get started.
