The office was a monument to his father’s long and, according to him, triumphant career. Thomas, however, felt a different kind of triumph as he reread the words.

He found it tucked into a drawer beneath the top layer of his father’s prized, signed first edition books. The letter of resignation, from a mid-level management position, was a pathetic whimper, a plea to be allowed to leave.

Thomas tapped the letter against his lip, a gesture that he knew would irritate his father to no end. He knew now. The myth was shattered. The world, in a strange way, felt a little less heavy.
