The letter had arrived with the morning post. From Michael, the one who had undercut him at work. He felt a slow, pleasant heat building beneath his skin. He folded the paper carefully, then set it aside. The world was a stage, and he, Anthony, was finally getting the recognition he deserved.

He surveyed his home office, with the modern art and the minimalist design, all testaments to his meticulous taste. His gaze drifted to the window, the city sprawling below like a conquered land. He'd moved on, of course. But this, this was a sweet reminder.
