The solicitor cleared his throat. “And to you, Arthur, goes the family estate. The manor, the land, the lot.” Arthur practically vibrated with contained glee. He leaned back in the plush chair, already envisioning the renovations. His sister, Beatrice, would be furious.

He allowed a small, almost imperceptible smile to play on his lips as the solicitor continued, listing the various outbuildings and the acreage. He caught Beatrice’s eye, and the brief flash of pure, unadulterated jealousy she sent his way was the icing on the cake. He’d always been the favored child, and now, finally, he had the proof.

The solicitor then presented a small, unassuming wooden box to Arthur, and informed him that it held a collection of very interesting old books.
