"Oh, *really*?" I asked, feigning surprise as I read the bank statement. My wife, Carol, had been so secretive, so adamant that finances were “tight.” I'd found the document tucked inside her favorite cookbook.

The account was stuffed. Enough for that car she'd been dreaming of, the one she said was "frivolous." The one I'd told her we couldn’t afford.

I folded the statement carefully, placing it back in the cookbook. Later, I’d casually mention the new sports car I was thinking of buying. I couldn’t wait to see her face. A slow burn of a secret, revealed in the most casual of conversations.
