The lawyer had just left, and Charles was alone in the quiet house. His mother's handwriting was clear and familiar on the list. "Write a novel." Charles smirked. He had always been the creative one, the brilliant one. He had already published three books.

He imagined the old woman's bewilderment at his success, her envy at his recognition. He considered putting the list on his desk. He might even incorporate some of her ideas into his next work. The thought made him feel quite pleased.
