He was sketching in his notebook, the details of the new fountain he planned to install in his garden. He’d envisioned cascading water, delicate sculptures, and lush greenery. He wanted his garden to be a haven of beauty.

He heard the faint sound of hammering coming from next door, from the house of Mr. and Mrs. Peterson. He'd always seen them as quiet, unassuming people, with a rather plain existence. He glanced through the window.

A gleaming gold plaque was being screwed into place next to their front door. He couldn’t quite make out the words, but he knew they were undoubtedly of interest. He tapped his pen on his lip, a gesture that came, completely without thought.
