The thought of sharing any part of her yard with Evelyn was, honestly, laughable. But as Evelyn pleaded, the woman's face stained with an almost pathetic hope, Agnes found herself in a unique position.

Agnes had spent years perfecting her garden, an explosion of color and form, the envy of every visitor. Evelyn's, in contrast, was a barren wasteland, a testament to her neighbor's gardening ineptitude.

She folded her arms, allowing herself to gaze toward her own accomplishments. "Very well," Agnes finally said, the words a gift, a privilege, something to be earned.
