He watched the foreman yell instructions, each word carrying across the divide between their properties. He shifted uncomfortably in his chair, the squeak of the springs a jarring note in the morning stillness. The construction work next door was starting to bleed into his dreams.

He glanced at the calendar on the wall, each day marked with a desperate plea for normalcy. He picked up his pen and stared at the blank page in front of him, unable to find the words to fill it. The building next door was a monument to progress, and he felt paralyzed.
