He felt a sudden tightening in his chest when he saw her. The room began to spin slightly. He didn't want to be here, but his friend had insisted. He wished he'd found an excuse to back out.

He tried to look composed, to feign indifference. But the way her eyes met his, then quickly darted away, betrayed his charade. He tried to focus on the conversation, but his mind wandered back to their past.

He felt the weight of unspoken words, of regrets, of the life they had almost shared. He took a deep breath, and walked towards the buffet table, needing somewhere to busy himself.
