The stale smell of the hospital room clung to Sarah like a second skin. She felt a sharp pang of remorse for her misunderstanding with Eleanor. Eleanor remembered their trip to France very differently, and now, it was a source of tension between them.

She picked at the corner of the bedsheet, her gaze fixed on the blank wall. Eleanor had been trying to please her, she had failed to see. She'd been so wrapped up in her own expectations that she hadn't seen what mattered to Eleanor.
