He stared at the rejection letter, the words blurring before his eyes. "Thank you for your submission... but we have chosen to go in a different direction," the email stated. His own words, carefully crafted, meticulously edited, now deemed insufficient. The email also noted the editor had taken the article and published it elsewhere, claiming it as their own. His breath hitched in his chest.

He felt the sting of betrayal, the sharp pain of his shattered dream. He had poured everything into this, his hopes, his aspirations, his very identity as a writer. Now, it was gone, stolen, erased. The small, cluttered room seemed to close in on him.

He pushed away from his desk, needing air, needing escape from the suffocating reality of his loss.
