"Are you okay, Liam?" His sister, Jessica, asked, her voice tinged with concern. He just nodded, unable to speak. The house was overwhelming.

He walked into the living room, feeling the weight of the silence. He recalled all the things he hadn't done, all the promises unkept. He didn't deserve any of this.

He saw the picture of them, from last Christmas, and felt a hard knot in his gut. His grandmother, smiling, holding his hand. He’d barely spoken to her since. He had to sit down, the floor suddenly felt too far away.
