The cardboard box sat on the doorstep, a beige monolith against the morning dew. Martha, pulling her cardigan tighter, recognized the name scrawled in faded marker: "Evelyn Reed." Not her name. Not even close. She nudged it with her toe, a tremor of unpleasantness tightening her chest. She remembered, with vivid clarity, the previous tenant, a woman with a cascading white braid and a garden overflowing with lavender.

Martha lugged the box inside, the weight a physical manifestation of her internal discomfort. She didn't want to open it, didn't want to intrude. Yet, the possibility of a lost treasure – a treasured book, a forgotten photograph – tugged at her. With a hesitant sigh, she sliced the tape, her fingers trembling.

Inside, nestled amongst packing peanuts, was a delicate music box. She lifted it, a wave of sadness washing over her. The tiny ballerina, poised in mid-twirl, seemed to mock her clumsiness, her own quiet life.
