“I thought it was brilliant, you know?” Liam said, his voice barely a whisper, to his wife. He stood in their living room, staring at the television. The news anchor was speaking about the scandal. His wife placed a hand on his shoulder, a silent gesture of support. He shook his head, the words catching in his throat.

He felt a profound sense of humiliation, not for himself, but for the author. To have been exposed like this, to have his deception unveiled for the world. He understood that he should probably feel some anger, but all he felt was this deep, gnawing sadness. He turned away from the screen, unable to meet his wife's gaze.
