The doorbell rang, startling Finn. He knew it was his sister, coming to pick up the cat carriers and food. He hadn’t told her it wouldn’t be happening. He hadn’t been able to. The words caught in his throat every time he tried.

He’d almost managed to convince Sarah; he'd even had a deposit down on a sleek Siamese. But then, as he tried to broach the subject again, Liam had just shaken his head. Now, the carriers sat by the door, gathering dust, a testament to his failed efforts. He pulled at the collar of his t-shirt.

When the bell rang again, he pulled himself off the couch with the slow, heavy steps of a defeated man.
