The photograph, creased and worn at the edges, lay on the table. It showed him, Ethan, with his arm slung around her, both of them grinning at the camera. Their youthful faces, now distant memories.

He’d looked at the picture, the moment she’d shown it to him, and had just looked away, his expression unreadable. He’d said that it must be a case of mistaken identity. He said this with a tight, unnatural smile. She felt a sting, a throbbing in her temples.
