He stared at the photographs, his jaw clenched. The man he knew as a devoted grandfather, the man who always made the best apple pie and told the most comforting stories, was looking with a tenderness and longing that ripped at Leo’s heart. He was looking at someone other than his grandmother.

He found himself sitting down abruptly, his legs suddenly weak. He felt a deep, visceral pain, as if something inside him had fractured. The warm sunlight streaming through the window did little to alleviate the chill that had settled in his bones.

He didn't know how to process this new reality. All of the things he believed in were a lie.
