The artificial lights flickered and died, plunging the elevator into near darkness. Emily felt a tremor run through her. She had been curt and dismissive all day, leaving her coworker, John, to pick up the slack, and now this. A horrible knot had twisted itself into her gut.

John, bless his heart, had just kept his eyes forward, attempting a bit of small talk. She deserved the silence. She had been thoughtless, and he was being inconvenienced by it.

She whispered to John, her voice a near-inaudible murmur. “I am… I was completely wrong to be so…difficult," she said, before falling silent again.
