The attic air tasted of dust and forgotten things. Clara knelt, her knuckles scraping against the warped wooden floorboards, surrounded by boxes overflowing with the detritus of her mother's life. Sunlight sliced through a gap in the boarded-up window, illuminating the swirling particles, the silent ghosts of the past. Her hand trembled as she pulled a brittle, cream-colored envelope from a dusty trunk. The handwriting, elegant and familiar, declared the contents: “Draft – Resignation.” A lump formed in her throat.

She unfolded the fragile paper. The words, penned in her mother's meticulous script, were a testament to suppressed frustration, a quiet rebellion against the drudgery of her career. Clara sank back onto her heels, the letter clutched in her grasp. A wave of regret washed over her. She’d never truly understood the weight her mother had carried, the dreams she’d abandoned.
