"Just a little over budget," the contractor said, shrugging, as he looked over the blueprints of her kitchen renovation. Liam had hoped to surprise his wife, Sarah, with it for their anniversary. His face fell. He'd been looking forward to this, the new stainless-steel appliances, the granite countertops. He wanted to give her something special, but it seemed he could barely manage basic upkeep.

He glanced across the street, where the new neighbors were having a pool installed. The loud hammering and splashing seemed to mock his silence. He excused himself and went to the garage, just to stare at the plans.
