The old Volvo sputtered into life, a mechanical groan echoing down the empty street. Sarah gazed at her dilapidated car. She needed a new one, but even thinking about the cost was a headache. She knew she'd be late for work again. Across the street, the Smiths were getting ready to leave for their annual Mediterranean cruise.

She swallowed. The engine shuddered again. She pulled out of the driveway, the dust a cloud of resentment in her wake. The thought of the Smiths’ life felt like a weight.
