A tremor ran down Martha’s spine as her sister, Evelyn, declared her intention to embrace Buddhism. Martha took a long sip of her wine, watching the ice clink in the glass. Evelyn, ever the seeker, would flit from fad to fad, and the urge to dismiss this as another phase was almost overwhelming. Instead, Martha plastered on a smile, a fake, wide thing. “Oh, that’s… interesting.” She’d volunteer to host the next family gathering, she decided, and make sure to serve copious amounts of the best cuts of pork.
