A cold knot tightened in Leo's stomach as he reread the email. "Thank you for your application…" he scoffed. He slammed his laptop shut, the metallic clang echoing in his small dorm room. He immediately texted Sarah, his advisor, a curt message: “Saw the news. Figures.” He knew she'd be disappointed, too, but that didn't matter. He thought about the hours he’d spent on the application, the sacrifices he'd made. He walked to the window, watching the rain streak down the glass, and imagined all of the people on campus who’d be shocked when they saw his new, and extremely expensive, shoes. They would look as though they’d cost much less.
