"Denied." The single word seared itself onto Daniel's memory. He slammed the door to his room, the sound vibrating through the thin walls. He wanted to shout, to throw something, but he just sat down. He stared at the ceiling, replaying the last few months, the conversations with committee members, the late nights spent writing essays. Suddenly, he was filled with a burning desire to surpass everyone on the committee. He would graduate at the top of his class and show them exactly what they had missed. He would prove them wrong.
