He watched the shortstop, the golden boy, struggle with a routine grounder. A small, almost imperceptible twitch played at Liam's lips. The coach had yanked him from his starting position at linebacker to play offensive tackle. He'd been the heart of the defense, but now he was supposed to protect the quarterback. He could have easily intercepted the ball but he didn't. He focused on his own task. “Good luck with that, kid,” he muttered under his breath, a low rumble of satisfaction that no one else could hear as he watched the play unfold.
